Festival De Cannes Sélection Officielle: Juste La Fin Du Monde

The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes.

Juste La Fin Du Monde (It’s Only the End of the World)

Xavier Dolan

Canada, France

SUMMARY

Canadian film-making boy wonder Xavier Dolan has been all the Cannes scene in his short, young career. Sharing a prize with the one and only Jean-Luc Godard, and then being invited to join the Jury is quite incredible. His new film arrives at the festival with audiences rubbing their hands together in anticipation. An intense family drama this time around, with an impressive ensemble including the likes of Vincent Cassel, Léa Seydoux, Marion Cotillard. The reception, though, was somewhat lacking in desire. A more conventional picture than was perhaps expected, Dolan may or may not have struggled with the tricky adapting process. The reviews were a mixed bag though, and there were definite signs that the young film-maker still has a true gift, stamping his own style all over this.

COMPETITION PROSPECTS

Considered less compelling than his previous works, and growingly self-indulgent, this is a tough call. A Best Director prize is not out of the question, but given the negative feedback generally I am inclined to say Dolan will be sitting this one out. At 27, and his gigantic reputation intact, any backlash won’t do him much harm.
