Art Directors Guild Awards: Your Favourite Crazy Rich Panthers

A packed awards season rolled on last evening with ADG’s Excellence in Production Design Awards awarding Oscar frontrunners ‘The Favourite’ and ‘Black Panther’ Best Period and Best Fantasy respectively.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ took home the award for Best Contemporary in what I consider the win of the night. Despite a slew of nominations across different award bodies, this is the film’s first major industry win.

For only the second year, animated films were honoured with ‘Isle of Dogs’ triumphing.

The guild has a knack for predicting the eventual Oscar winner with the Academy favouring period films more times than not. And so everything points to ‘The Favourite’ remaining well…the favourite but the enduring power of ‘Black Panther’ cannot be denied and after becoming the first Africa-American to be nominated for the Best Production Design award, it’s hard not to see Hannah Beachler rightfully taking this all the way. It would be win we could all get behind in what could be an otherwise less than popular ceremony.

On the television side, the unstoppable ‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’ won ‘One-Hour Period or Fantasy Single-Camera Series’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ took home ‘One-Hour Contemporary Single-Camera Series’ and ‘Glow’ continued to shine with ‘Half Hour Single-Camera Series’
