Filmotomy Christmas Advent Calendar 2018 – Day 5

That Shouldn’t Happen At Christmas

It’s difficult for Christmas films post-2000 to make an impact. Unless we’re talking about Elf, of course. Many have tried (The Holiday, Arthur Christmas, Fred Claus), but they just don’t hold a candle to the likes of Gremlins, The Night Before Christmas or Miracle on 34th Street.

Except, that is, for Chris Peckover’s Better Watch OutJust in case you’re thinking of watching this with the family on Christmas Day – don’t. Better Watch Out Makes an impact as it’s so unexpected.

Judging a film by its poster, I figured I’d be in for a predictable watch, but holy Christmas was I wrong. Without giving anything away, the anti-Christmas moment I’m thinking of involves a swinging tin of paint, a blindfolded babysitter’s ex and a very, very big mess.

It’s gory, shocking and makes for a total fuck you to anything festive. If you’re into alternative festive films, this one’s for you.
