Festival De Cannes Sélection Officielle: Elle

The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes.

Elle

Paul Verhoeven

France, Germany, Belgium

SUMMARY

Paul Verhoeven has been missing from the film world for about ten years – and it feels like a lot longer. His new movie, entering the Cannes Film Festival, is his very first French language film. Psychological, tense, somewhat satirical too, Elle is a bit of a guilty pleasure (Verhoeven has provided these before – Robocop; Total Recall). Cannes darling Isabelle Huppert is his leading lady, and it is reported she is in terrific form here – but when is she not? The promising, encouraging response to the movie has surprised a few, and was touted for a potential prize come the closing ceremony.

COMPETITION PROSPECTS

A Best Director prize for the visually perverse Dutch film-maker would actually be a popular win it seems. The comedy edge may not allow it to compete for the big prizes, and again there is just too much strong competition elsewhere.

I make sure it's known the company's in business. I'd see that it had a certain panache. That's what I'm good at. Not the work, not the work... the presentation.
