Festival De Cannes Sélection Officielle: Loving

The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes.

Loving

Jeff Nichols

United States, United Kingdom

SUMMARY

For those that can remember the Lovings story that ran in Life Magazine many moons ago, may be familiar with the themes of the motion picture Loving (the two main characters’ surnames incidentally). Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton) is the white man who proudly marries black woman Mildred Jeter (Ruth Negga) in the 1950s when interracial marriage was against the “law”. The legal case that ensues unites the rest of the drama, a film with a true beating heart. A slice of Southern history seemed inevitable for writer-director Jeff Nichols (on the back of impressive movies: Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special), his light touch has both warmed audiences and also kept them at an emotional arm’s reach – a progressive, non-throttling story nonetheless.

COMPETITION PROSPECTS

Already an awards contender, in spite of some fine but not overly-outstanding reviews, Loving is being mentioned in the same sentence as Oscar. In Cannes it is oozing a warm glow, but could come away with nothing. The subtle, compassionate turn from Ruth Negga makes her a / the front-runner for Best Actress though.

I make sure it's known the company's in business. I'd see that it had a certain panache. That's what I'm good at. Not the work, not the work... the presentation.
