Festival De Cannes Sélection Officielle: Ma’ Rosa

The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes.

Ma’ Rosa

Brillante Mendoza

Philippines

SUMMARY

Filipino director Brillante Mendoza has set his stall out with a to-the-point family drama. From a struggling family, Ma’Rosa (Jaclyn Jones), mother of four, runs a small local store with her husband, trying to make profits from other supermarkets’ products. Oh, and she sells drugs too. The family are soon taken in by the law, and thereafter bribed. Sounds gritty, and so it is in a kind of documentary style, but the movie has been accepted as a kind of black comedy to some extent.

COMPETITION PROSPECTS

Brillante Mendoza was honored with the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury for Un Certain Regard contender Taklub just last year, and has twice contended the Palme d’Or with Serbis in 2008, and Kinatay in 2009, for which he walked away with the Best Director Prize. I can’t help feeling there is far too strong a batch of films this year for Mendoza to add to his win tally.

I make sure it's known the company's in business. I'd see that it had a certain panache. That's what I'm good at. Not the work, not the work... the presentation.
