Moments ago, in Berlin, The Square was named the Best European Film of the year at the 30th annual awards, which was kind what was expected at this stage given the Palme d’Or winner was also the recipient of European Comedy, Best Actor for Claes Bang, as well a double for Ruben Östlund who won Screenplay and Director. So a great night for the Swedish picture, but let’s not forget the abundance of fine films on display this year from Europe.
120 battements par minute (BPM (Beats per Minute)) and Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Nelyubov (Loveless) were both hits in Cannes, and well fancied here. The former won Editing, and the Russian drama took Cinematography and Composer. Another excellent film to be honored was Hungary’s Teströl és lélekröl (On Body and Soul) which won Best European Actress for Alexandra Borbély. In the British corner, Lady Macbeth snagged the Discovery Prize.
