Much like the Best Supporting Actor race, the nominations for the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards gave us six Best Actor nominees who scored at both awards in Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent), Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), and Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon). So we’re likely looking at our final five Oscar noms from this list. But who misses out? Or will there be a wildcard pick?
Jordan is currently leading with wins from the critics groups, but the big hitters have spread the wealth. DiCaprio scored with the National Board of Review, Moura won with New York, and Hawke with Los Angeles. Chalamet has picked up a few wins with the smaller groups, while Edgerton awaits his first victory, but he’s been nominated everywhere and is the only one of the group with an Indie Spirit nomination.
Right now, it feels like that fifth spot is a battle between Jordan and Hawke. One is a beloved veteran and four-time Oscar nominee, while the other is chasing his first nomination for a Best Picture contender in which he plays dual characters. It’s hard to tell which way the Academy will go, so perhaps the SAG nominations on January 7 will clear this up.
