Five films scored costume design nominations at both the Critics Choice Awards and the Costume Designers Guild; Frankenstein, Wicked: For Good, Hamnet, Sinners, and Hedda. Could that already be our final five at the Oscars? I think the first four are fairly solid bets, but Hedda hasn’t exactly fired this precursor season. It could be replaced by a broader contender like Marty Supreme or One Battle After Another. 12-time nominee Colleen Atwood is behind the latter’s creations, and while it’s rare contemporary costuming gets recognised, a nomination is entirely plausible when they’re coming from such a legend.
For the moment, I think Atwood has a better chance of being nominated for Kiss of the Spider Woman with her collaborator Christine L. Cantella. It was a surprise to see them miss a nod with the CDG, which could indicate an Oscar nod is not on the cards.
