It’s always hard to predict the final five nominees for Best Film Editing. The nominations for the biggest editing precursor prize from American Cinema Editors are split into drama and comedy categories, but it does whittle the list of contenders down. The only major Oscar contender to miss with ACE was The Brutalist and it’s difficult to know whether that’s a bad sign or just a weird blip. There are rumours of screener issues so perhaps that explains it.
With the critics groups who do award a prize for film editing, there’s no clear leader, so they’re not much help determining this race either. For now, I’m sticking with five films expected to receive a Best Picture nomination, but don’t be surprised to see something outside the major race sneak in like Challengers, September 5, or Civil War.
