With the unveiling of the Academy’s shortlists, we now know the final 10 films in contention for Best Sound. There are no real snubs or surprises to be found here, with the usual mix of loud action blockbusters and music-centric stories. The fact that Sirāt landed here might shock some, but it absolutely deserves recognition. I think its strong showing with the shortlists overall is indicative of multiple nominations coming its way.
This race won’t really get interesting until we hear from bodies like the Cinema Audio Society and the Motion Picture Sound Editors in mid-January. F1 remains the undeniable frontrunner here. It’s the adage of the loudest film often wins here, and the sound design of this car-racing epic genuinely rattled every cinema it played in.
