As expected, Netflix has chosen to campaign the entire cast of The Trial of the Chicago 7 in the supporting race, but it’s still anyone’s guess who will be singled out or if the film can achieve multiple acting nominations. I’m still sticking with Sacha Baron Cohen, especially after his well-received performance in Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm.
Amazon Studios also confirmed their plans for Regina King’s One Night in Miami, with the studio submitting Leslie Odom Jr and Aldis Hodge for consideration in the supporting race. That all but cements Odom Jr as the frontrunner here. He’s already won the G and the T of the elusive EGOT for his work in Broadway’s Hamilton. The O could be coming in April.
Elsewhere, Stanley Tucci joins the race for his acclaimed performance in gay tearjerker Supernova. While Tucci has only received one nomination in the past, he is so universally adored that he could be a serious darkhorse in this race.
As we still have no idea if Judas and the Black Messiah will even be released during the eligibility period or who Warner Bros will deem lead and supporting between Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield. For the time being, Stanfield drops out of my final five predictions.
