Filmotomy is a website dedicated to film and cinema lovers all around the world. Founded by Robin Write in 2014, you can find articles and reviews covering underrepresented areas like world cinema, women in film, and independent cinema. Recently, we have expanded our horizons to cover such important areas as Television, and Music.
But last year marked an amazing celebratory decade of the Femme Filmmakers Festival, hosted by Filmotomy. For the 10th edition of the festival, we celebrated a record-breaking 63 short films screened online across two-weeks from 19th through to 28th September 2025. You can read all about the festival highlights here.
Celebrating the Best of Female Filmmakers
Each year we award the best short films made by female filmmakers across multiple categories ranging from best writing to directing and cinematography amongst others. Our top three prize winners are awarded to the most outstanding films in the festival that really stood out. As well as, made their mark in terms of both their quality in storytelling and filmmaking.
We advocate for and champion films made by female filmmakers which cover everything from Documentaries and International Cinema to LGBT stories, Student Films, and filmmakers just starting out in the industry. We support films about women, made by women. Furthermore, many of the films we include in our festival every year cover the female experience. Such topics explored include, coming-of-age, love, and relationships, and the woes of falling out of love.
A Decade of Festival Love
At the 10th Femme Filmmakers Festival, we awarded the Gold Sovereign award (our grand prize) to Louisa Connolly-Burnham’s Sister Wives, which starred BAFTA-winning actress, Mia Mckenna-Bruce. Runner-ups included joint winners, Let It Flow (dir. Galina Chakarova) and Francie (dir. Zoe Ellender) for the Silver Sword award (second prize). The Bronze Bell award (third prize) was awarded to Happy Snaps (dir. Tyro Heath). The film festival jury members also awarded Osian Pirotte in Happy Snaps for Male Performance and Molly Keogh in Mole for Female Performance.
We welcome and encourage female filmmakers who have made a short film in the last year to enter into the Femme Filmmakers Festival. Entries can be submitted through FilmFreeway when the official run-up to the festival begins. But make sure you don’t miss our deadline! Keep an eye out on our website for more information when it comes available for our next festival run.
Showcasing Talented Female Filmmakers
If you know any female filmmakers who have made short films in the past year, let them know about our festival! However, we also welcome multiple short films from the same filmmakers to enter into our festival competition. We can’t wait to see who wins the top prizes this year.
The Femme Filmmakers Festival is open for everyone to attend screenings online. This year we will come together and celebrate the 11th year of the festival. We hope you can join us. See you there!
