Festival De Cannes Sélection Officielle: Aquarius

The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes.

Aquarius

Kleber Mendonça Filho

Brazil

SUMMARY

Following on from the success of his debut feature film Neighbouring Sounds, Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho arrives in Cannes with a drama in three chapters following the intimate and strong-willed nature of Clara, a cancer survivor, now attempting to cope with being an elderly woman facing loneliness, segregated sexual encounters, and certain residential propositions. Set in Recife, in eastern Brazil, Filho directs at his own pace, letting the characters breath. Oozing dignity and strength of character, Clara is portrayed by the majestic Sonia Braga, a rich, commanding central performance, nobody more than the veteran actress deserves the credit for films positive reception.

COMPETITION PROSPECTS

A real possibility of sleeper status here, this could well nab any of the top prizes on Sunday night. I know we are already bogged down with an abundance of excellent Best Actress contenders at Cannes, but nobody is going to argue that Sonja Braga is not right up there.
