Festival De Cannes Sélection Officielle: La Fille Inconnue

The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes.

La Fille Inconnue (The Unknown Girl)

Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne

Belgium

SUMMARY

The super-talented Dardenne brothers are a part of the regular Cannes movie-going lifestyle in similarly consistent, relentless fashion as Ken Loach. Two Palme d’Ors to their credit (Rosetta; L’enfant), as well as countless other could-have-beens in competition (Two Days, One Night; The Kid with a Bike – to name two), the Belgian brothers are a force to be reckoned with. The new, obviously highly anticipated, film is The Unknown Girl, a template level-headed social drama with French star Adèle Haenel as young doctor Jenny finds herself embroiled in regrettable mystery resulting from simply not answering an intercom door from a girl who at the time needed help. With a reported sense of non-progressive drama, and an absence of some of the Dardenne usual spark, their new film seems to have fallen short of the very, very high mark they have continued to set.

COMPETITION PROSPECTS

I am still getting over how Luc and Jean-Pierre’s last film Two Days, One Night cam away empty-handed in 2014. If that can’t succeed, then The Unknown Girl might struggle to take a prize this time around. Nothing for them again this year I suspect. We still love you though boys.
