The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes.
Mal De Pierres (From the Land of the Moon)
Nicole Garcia
France
SUMMARY
Playing in a movie in competition at the Cannes Film Festival for an impressive fifth year running Marion Cotillard stars opposite Louis Garrel as a hot-blooded country girl from a prosperous family. Set in 1950s, director Nicole Garcia returns to the festival after 10 years (Charlie Says), with Mal de Pierres, or From the Land of the Moon, adapted from the period novel by Milena Agus. The film has been criticized for its depiction of time and passion itself, but deemed perfect perhaps for those longing a conventional romance.
COMPETITION PROSPECTS
Garcia is not the woman film-maker who will conquer this year in Cannes. As for the huge talent Cotillard, she could easily have won Best Actress and /or the Palme d’Or in recent years with far greater movies Rust and Bone, The Immigrant, and Two Days, One Night. The French actress will have to await the response to her second film in competition, Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World, if the prizeless coincidence is to continue. Like Macbeth last year, her movie Mal de Pierres has no chance here.
