The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes.
Personal Shopper
Olivier Assayas
France
SUMMARY
Like a few film-makers returning to Cannes this year following competition in 2014 (an incredible year), French director Olivier Assayas follows the intoxicating Clouds of Sils Maria with thriller Personal Shopper. Re-teaming too with actress Kristen Stewart (a busy Cannes session for her appearing in Woody Allen’s Café Society too), this time the lead is hers as the title character. Maureen is grieving the death of her brother, while receiving some mysterious text messages – a huge section of the movie dedicated to the exchange of messages. A rather ghostly story, then, receiving a jumbled reaction from various audiences and critics.
COMPETITION PROSPECTS
Kristen Stewart is popular everywhere, and garnered some credible feedback for her performance here, but I can’t entertain the idea she is a strong enough contender for Best Actress this time. Boos during the screenings of such diversive films have often resulted in a Palme d’Or – I don’t see it happening here, even if Personal Shopper has given Cannes a real buzz of the eerie and extraordinary.
