Luca Guadagnino to direct, Rooney Mara to star in Audrey Hepburn biopic

Renowned filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is reportedly at the helm of a new Apple feature project— an Audrey Hepburn biopic with Oscar nominated Rooney Mara set to play the legendary late actress and humanitarian. According to Deadline and Variety, both Apple Studios and Mara are also producing the project which will be written by Michael Mitnick, a creator with EP credits at HBO (specifically with their original series “Vinyl”).

Mara has dozens of film credits under her belt including The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in 2012 and Carol in 2016, both celebrated performances which earned her Oscar nominations. Her latest credit being a collaboration with Guillermo del Toro on his film Nightmare Alley, is getting some awards buzz.

Guadagnino received an Academy Award nomination in 2018 for Call Me By Your Name starring Timothée Chalamet. The film earned the young actor an Oscar nomination as well, which aided in skyrocketing his success.

Hepburn herself was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1929 and survived growing up in the Nazi occupied Netherlands during World War II. She went on to study ballet in Amsterdam in the mid 40s and had some work as a chorus girl as well as landing small film roles; her first of which was a part in the 1952 feature Monte Carlo Baby.

Her first major leading role was 1953’s Roman Holiday, which earned her an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for her performance. Other iconic performances of hers include her portrayals in films such as Sabrina, My Fair Lady, and of course Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Although Hepburn is infamous for her many roles in film, she also was an active humanitarian and was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1993. Especially in her later years she was heavily involved in international charity work as a Goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, and continued to be involved up until her passing from cancer in 1993.

Audrey was 63 years young when she passed and is forever remembered for her countless contributions to the film world, the passion she put into her humanitarian work and ultimately her love for humankind.
