The Producers Guild Of America just announced their annual list of nominees and while there isn’t always an overlap between the Best Picture nominees at the Oscars and the PGA nominees, these nominees are a strong indicator of what films are out on top in the Best Picture race.
Typically there are 10 nominees each year but here, thanks to a tie in voting, there is a surprising set of eleven films. I’m sure nobody placed their bets on Molly’s Game making the cut since beforehand; its only citations have been for lead actress Jessica Chastain and writer/director Aaron Sorkin. Also, I, Tonya has become a formidable threat for Best Picture since it is a Best Motion Picture nominee at the Golden Globes and was recently cited by both the Writers and Editors Guild. The Post managed to make the cut as well, making this a much needed boost for the film after it got shut out by the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild.
Since the Producers Guild likes to anoint populist blockbusters (i.e. Star Trek, Skyfall, Deadpool, etc.), their populist pick this year was the record-breaking cultural juggernaut Wonder Woman. It is completely up in the air as to whether or not it’ll make Best Picture but this citation still keeps it in the conversation.
Some notable misses include Logan, Mudbound, The Florida Project, Darkest Hour, and Phantom Thread.
