Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story were the major winners at the 79th Golden Globe Awards with both films taking out three categories. The Power of the Dog was awarded Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for Campion, and Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee. West Side Story claimed the prizes for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, Best Actress – Comedy or Musical for Rachel Zegler, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose.
Elsewhere, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car continued its winning streak with the award for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, Encanto was named Best Motion Picture – Animated, and Kenneth Branagh took out the Best Screenplay prize for Belfast. The only major upset of the ceremony was Nicole Kidman winning Best Actress – Drama for Being the Ricardos. This is Kidman’s fifth Globe win for acting, so maybe it’s not all that surprising.
