There were some expected inclusions like Get Out, Lady Bird, Call Me By Your Name, and The Shape Of Water. But there were also some slight surprises as well. Martin McDonagh may be line to be Oscar nominated for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri but he was ineligible due to strict guild rules involving its production. So, his omission isn’t a jaw dropper.
However, I, Tonya popping up in Original Screenplay over the likes of Phantom Thread and The Florida Project is quite a surprise. Even though the WGA has proven they’re partial to nominating superhero films like Deadpool and Guardians Of The Galaxy, seeing Logan make the cut over the cultural juggernaut Wonder Woman is a surprise as well. While Logan was a critical and box office success, it still came out very early in the year and nominations like these keep its awards hopes high.
