Just when we perhaps thought that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was slipping down the ranks somewhat in the awards race, the film goes and picks up 4 Golden Globe awards. Martin McDonagh won the Screenplay prize, and the film then finished the night on a greater high by winning Motion Pictue Drama. Meanwhile, Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell won their respective Acting awards, which although not surprises, do raise eyebrows of doubt for the prospects of Sally Hawkins and Willem Dafoe. Especially as AMPAS are now in their voting period.
The Shape of Water, though, came away with 2 Globes. Composer Alexandre Desplat won Score, and Guillermo del Toro was a popular win for Director. The latter is a huge prize. Although it does not always tally with the Academy Award winner, it’s a huge boost for the fantasy romance.
Coming-of-age debut from director Greta Gerwig was a late-comer on the night. Saoirse Ronan was named Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for Lady Bird, and the film took the Motion Picture prize.
Gary Oldman continued his momentum, seemingly unstoppable, as his movie Darkest Hour clings to its only hope. James Franco won the other Acting prize for The Disaster Artist – Tommy Wiseau was present to join the actor on the stage. Animated film winner was Coco, no shocker there. The Foreign Language Film award when to In the Fade, beating out the favored The Square. “This is Me” from the Hugh Jackman-starrer The Greatest Showman was the Song victor, while Allison Janney nabbed the Supporting Actress prize for I, Tonya.
