Redoubtable
Michel Hazanavicius
France
CRITICAL RESPONSE
“First and foremost, Le Redoutable is a marvelous comedy very reminiscent of Woody Allen’s classics (it has a few jokes ripped straight from Annie Hall and Stardust Memories), and a treasure chest for anyone enamored of the Nouvelle Vague look.” – Jordan Hoffman (Vanity Fair)
“Hazanavicius’ film in fact focuses on is the romance and brief marriage of Godard to his muse and the young actress of La Chinoise, Anne Wiazemsky (Stacy Martin, the best thing here)… Beautiful period details, plentiful cinephiliac references and gorgeous photography: Redoubtable is a good time at the movies.” – Tomris Laffly (Film Journal)
“With The Artist, his Oscar-winning homage to silent cinema, Hazanavicius had a whole era of filmic touchstones he was drawing inspiration from—albeit badly. Redoubtable narrows that frame of reference to just the most basic signifiers of Godard’s late-1960s aesthetic: primary colors, avant-grade sound sync, ironic voiceover in relation to on-screen action, etc.” – Sam C. Mac (Slant Magazine)
PRIZE POTENTIAL
This could pop up anywhere or nowhere on prize night. I’d predict the latter. Louise Garrel and Stacy Martin are most certainly in conversation for the acting prizes though – a win for both would be unprecedented, but stranger things have happened.
