The Femme Filmmakers Festival was conceived out of sheer human nature. Or at least, the kind of passion for a greater awareness of the female filmmakers that also reside on this planet. As Filmotomy has always striven to shine lights on the corners of the film world that simply don’t get the attention like the bigger guns do, setting up an exclusive event to celebrate these women and their movies seemed inevitable.
The festival itself, now in its ninth year, is an online event. One where a curated selection of films is given a platform for not just the filmmakers themselves, but also audiences who perhaps don’t know how to watch these films, or have not even heard of them at all. The awareness is key. It’s actually quite alarming how many films people have not seen or even knew existed.
So, the online festival aims to showcase many different kinds of female-directed films – from all around the world, amateurs and professionals alike, shorts and features. And as each year has gone by since our rather humbling first year in 2016, our coverage has grown. We encourage viewing of the films, where to find them, arrange viewing sessions, interview filmmakers, review the films in the line-up, and so on and so on. And with the 10-day festival window we are able to offer extensive, daily coverage on filmotomy.com.
As well as the various forms of attention we can give to these films, we also launched a kind of roll of honour in 2017 for short films. Pretty much a virtual awards show, except with no physical venue or gold statuettes. From a standard group of categories – including merits for technical achievements as well as acting and writing – we would assemble a small jury of film people (writers, filmmakers, bloggers, performers etc) to come together and decide these small, but important honours.
