The Florida Film Critics Circle announced their nominations, citing a whole host of familiar films battling it out. Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water appeared most frequently, favorable of course in many tech categories. In a similar boat is Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk – both films apparently weighted by the tag that they cannot win Best Picture at the Oscars because of the lack of SAG Ensemble nomination. I don’t buy it. The usual suspects, then, also scored well with Florida critics, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Get Out and Lady Bird, are many an Oscars expert’s trio to beat.
Outside of the popular bubble, are some refreshingly nominees well worth the mention. Robert Pattinson for Good Time, Cynthia Nixon for A Quiet Passion, and Barry Keoghan for The Killing of A Sacred Deer all nabbed acting nods. And in the Screenplay categories it was interesting to see the likes of Marjorie Prime, The Lost City of Z, and Wonderstruck in the running.
