Screen Actors Guild Nominations Offer A Few Surprises

WOW!!!! That is all I can say about my thoughts on the Screen Actors Guild nominations. There’s so many shockers that I don’t know where to begin. For starters, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri seriously over-performed with four nominations including Best Ensemble and a surprise Supporting Actor mention for Woody Harrelson. Also, late breakers The Post and Phantom Thread were nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Steve Carell bulldozed his way into the Supporting Actor category over the likes of Michael Stuhlbarg and Armie Hammer for Call Me By Your Name which was nowhere to be found outside of Timothee Chalamet in Best Lead Actor.

But, The Big Sick got a much needed rebound after being completely shut out by the Golden Globes on Monday and Get Out continues to have awards heat as it made Best Ensemble and got a Lead Actor nomination for Daniel Kaluuya. Also, despite the film being a critical and financial underperformer, Denzel Washington has become a formidable Best Actor contender for Roman J. Israel, Esq..

Some other notable misses include The Shape Of Water for Best Ensemble and Supporting Female for Octavia Spencer and Tiffany Haddish in Supporting Female for Girls Trip.

  1. The Steve Carell inclusion is interesting. I wondered if the guilds would put the final nail in Battle of the Sexes’ coffin. Honestly, I took him out my predictions for Oscars just this week, but kept Riseborough in Supporting Actress – because I’m crazy like that.
Now we get to read about how Dunkirk is dead in the water because it has no Ensemble nomination, nor an acting one. And that the upcoming Writers Guild will also put Dunkirk to bed. How wrong you all are.
That said, Three Billboards and The Shape of Water look like the biggest threats now officially. The Harrelson and Jenkins love tells you this.
