Best Actress Oscars Predictions (December)

Much like the Best Actor race, the nominations for the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards gave us six Best Actress nominees who scored at both awards in Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee), Emma Stone (Bugonia), and Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another). So we’re likely looking at our final five Oscar noms from this list. But who misses out? Or will there be a wildcard pick from the six other contenders who only landed a GG nod?

Missing a CCA nomination was naturally a big dent in the campaign of Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good). But the film has rallied with eight mentions on the Academy’s shortlist, so perhaps she’s still in the running. Focus Features is heavily campaigning Kate Hudson (Song Song Blue), but I think this category is just too competitive for her to break in.

Buckley, Reinsve, and Infiniti feel safe based on starring in Best Picture contenders. Byrne is experiencing a tremendous run with the critics groups, including wins with New York, Los Angeles, and the National Board of Review. That success is reminiscent of Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths) last year, who ultimately missed an Oscar nod. Could the same fate befall Byrne?

Seyfried’s success with GG and CCA keeps her firmly in the race, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that her film blanked with the Oscars shortlists, including snubs in categories it should have appeared in, like Best Original Song and Best Original Score. Let’s see what SAG makes of this race when they unveil their nominees on January 7.
