Well, well, well. The race for Best Cinematography has certainly taken an interesting turn in February. After the Academy gave us a final five that matched the BAFTAs picks in late February, presumed frontrunner Sinners has taken a tumble. One Battle After Another beat it twice across the pond, with wins at BAFTA and with the British Society of Cinematographers, and you’d have to say that makes it our leader at this late stage.
Given the American Society of Cinematographers Awards won’t take place until after Oscar voting has ended, it means Autumn Durald Arkapaw will enter this final period without a major win under her belt. Is there still a chance she makes history as the first female cinematographer to win an Academy Award? Absolutely, but it’s now in the hands of Warner Bros. to run an effective campaign and turn the tide.
