With the unveiling of the Academy’s shortlists, we now know the final ten films in contention for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. There were two huge snubs in the form of Barbie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The latter was particularly shocking, given this category has been particularly receptive to superhero films. Bravo for the inclusion of The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which featured some of the best monster makeup and physical horrors in years.
We’re now looking at another year where this category may go hand-in-hand with an acting win. We saw that last year with The Whale‘s win here signalling Brendan Fraser’s eventual triumph for Best Actor. If Maestro takes it out, could that spell a victory for Bradley Cooper? Likewise, if Poor Things wins, might we see Emma Stone win Best Actress? The former feels like the leader for the moment, but anything could change from here.
BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING PREDICTIONS:
1. Maestro (Netflix) – CCA
2. Poor Things (Searchlight Pictures) – CCA
3. Oppenheimer (Universal Pictures) – CCA
4. Golda (Bleecker Street)
5. Society of the Snow (Netflix)
IN CONTENTION:
