Best Sound Oscars Predictions (December)

With the unveiling of the Academy’s shortlists, we now know the final 10 films in contention for Best Sound. While big musicals like The Color Purple and Wonka missed out on being shortlisted last year, we’ve got four musicals here this year; Wicked, Emilia Pérez, A Complete Unknown, and Joker: Folie à Deux. Okay, A Complete Unknown isn’t technically a musical, but you know what I mean. The fact three of these will likely make it through highlights what a strong year it’s been for music-based cinema.

This race won’t really get interesting until we hear from bodies like the Cinema Audio Society and the Motion Picture Sound Editors in mid-January. Dune: Part Two remains the undeniable frontrunner here and it’s unlikely anything is stopping it.
