The Academy’s nominations announcement in late January gave us one minor surprise when Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value) joined co-star Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas in the final five Oscar nominees. While Fanning had nabbed nominations at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, both ceremonies had six slots, so she was generally considered a slight outsider in the Oscar race.
But this category threw another curveball our way in February when Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) took home the BAFTA. Not entirely a huge surprise Mosaku scored a win on home soil, but, just like the battle for Best Supporting Actor, it does mean we now have three different winners from the three televised awards with one ceremony left to go.
Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) has the Globe. Amy Madigan (Weapons) has the CCA. Mosaku has the BAFTA. All three are nominated at this weekend’s Actor Awards. Fanning and Lilleaas are not. Does that mean the winner with SAG is our eventual Oscar champion? What happens if SAG goes with a non-Oscar nominee like Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good) or Odessa A’zion (Marty Supreme)? This race is either about to get much clearer or even murkier.
