Wicked: For Good arrived in November, and while the reviews weren’t as strong as its predecessor, there was still almost universal praise for Ariana Grande’s performance. But those cooler reviews are certainly now giving us prognosticators pause over her chances for a win in Best Supporting Actress.
A history-making nomination (she’d be the first to be nominated twice in this category for playing the same character) seems fairly certain, but a victory now likely hinges on the film getting a Best Picture nomination; something that’s starting to feel a little shaky. We know the Academy loves to give this category to a musical performance, but perhaps the fact they did that just last year with Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) works against Grande.
Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) scored a win at the Gotham Awards in their gender neutral supporting category, which is a great start to her campaign. If the Academy aren’t feeling Sentimental Value so strongly to make it a double nominee in this category, Mosaku could very easily slip into that fifth spot.
