The whole world seem virtual now. How do we watch movies together? Have we forgotten? The Femme Filmmakers Festival began on Friday 28th August and ran for 10 days, and has always offered that discourse by default. Now in its 5th year celebrating films made by women, the FemmeFilmFest has always been a purely online showcase.
This year, given the state of the world as the lockdown has dictated, the online festival circuit is now an almost sacrificial commodity. In a way, I am personally relieved the Femme Filmmakers Festival was already carried by the online platform, avoiding so many organisational headaches – but generally this whole fiasco clouds us with sadness. Whether we watch movies or not.
Right now, though, we will dwell on the movies, and not the unfortunate hand we have been dealt. I’m talking about the 23 short films that are still available to watch online for free.
