Final Oscars Nominations Predictions – Best Original Score

With the Academy’s nominations announcement drawing closer by the day, it’s time to lay it all on the line with my final Oscar nomination predictions. And, with BAFTA nominations coming five days after the Academy’s announcement, we’re flying without that typical precursor stat. At least we have their longlists for some reference.

We have four film scores that all earned nominations from the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the Society of Composers & Lyricists and Hollywood Music in Media, plus appear on the BAFTA longlist: Frankenstein, Hamnet, One Battle After Another, and Sinners. It’s safe to consider them locks for Oscar nominations, barring a shock snub.

That leaves the final spot open to numerous contenders. It could be Sirāt, given how well it performed with the Academy’s shortlists. F1 and perennial favourite Hans Zimmer could easily sneak in here. Maybe it’s Train Dreams, especially if the film “overperforms.” But I’ve landed on Marty Supreme on the basis of it being a stronger contender overall.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE PREDICTIONS:
1. Sinners – Ludwig Göransson (Warner Bros.) – BAFTA longlist, CCA, GGHMMA (main), SCL
2. One Battle After Another – Johnny Greenwood (Warner Bros.) – BAFTA longlist, CCA, GG, HMMA (main), SCL
3. Frankenstein – Alexandre Desplat (Netflix) – BAFTA longlist, CCA, GG, HMMA (main), SCL
4. Hamnet – Max Richter (Focus Features) – BAFTA longlist, CCA, GG, HMMA (main), SCL
5. Marty Supreme – Daniel Lopatin (A24) – BAFTA longlist, CCA, HMMA (main)

Alternate: Sirāt – Kangding Ray (NEON) – GG
