Perhaps one of the most apt films to feature at an event such as the Femme Filmmakers Festival is Sarah Gavron‘s 2015 period piece, Suffragette. And what a time frame to enrapture an essential story about women.
The suffragette movement of 1912, over a hundred years ago now, is the focal point of Gavron’s film. Written by Abi Morgan, Suffragette encapsulates not just the fight for solidarity from the point of view of repressed women, but also demonstrates the isolation and friction that comes from the people (of both sexes) in and around the lives of the main characters.
Suffragette shows off a remarkable cast, with the magnificent Carey Mulligan front and centre. Finish your laundry later, the following links ought to keep you engrossed for hours – before you actually go ahead and watch the film itself. And do sit through the closing credits.
