74th Writers Guild of America Awards Nominations Announced

The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominations for the 74th Writers Guild of America Awards. While these nominees are generally a solid indicator for the two Screenplay categories at the Academy Awards, only screenplays written under the WGA’s strict guidelines are eligible for their annual awards.

While films like Belfast, The Power of the Dog, Drive My Car, A Hero, The Lost Daughter, Mass, and Parallel Mothers are major contenders for screenplay nominations from the Academy, they were all deemed ineligible by the WGA.

With so many major players missing due to ineligibility, it’s maybe unwise to read too much into the WGA’s nominations and eventual winners this year. Still, it’s a nice boost for films on the edge of an Oscar nom like tick, tick…BOOM!, West Side Story, Nightmare Alley, and The French Dispatch.

The winners will be announced on Sunday, March 20. Full list of nominations below.
