Academy Awards Nominations: Greta Gerwig Joins The Oscars History Makers

The Shape of Water joins films like From Here to Eternity, Gone with the Wind, with an Academy Awards Nominations tally of 13. Steven Spielberg directs yet another Best Picture nominee with The Post.

Women land deserved nods. Tatiana S. Riegel for Film Editing on I, Tonya. Rachel Morrison, for Mudbound, the first woman shortlisted for Best Cinematography. And of course, Greta Gerwig joins the illustrious ranks of Kathryn Bigelow, Jane Champion, Sofia Coppola, Lina Wertmüller, as only the fifth female nominated for Lady Bird as Best Director.

Gerwig also marks a debut Director. Just like Get Out‘s Jordan Peele, a black filmmaker joining the historical bandwagon. On the flip side, 89 year-old James Ivory earns a popular Best Adapted Screenplay nod for Call Me by Your Name. And let’s not forget Christopher Nolan grabbed his very first Director nod for Dunkirk.

Oh, Meryl Streep makes it 21 nominations for acting. Timothee Chalamet at 22 is the youngest Best Actor nominee in over 70 years. At 88, Christopher Plummer is the oldest acting nominee.

So who is missing then? Well, Jane was not nominated for Best Documentary Feature. Or LA 92. Martin McDonagh was absent in the Best Director line-up for what was a surging Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Paul Thomas Anderson is in though for Phantom Thread. The Florida Project does not make Best Picture. And Wonder Woman – nowhere to be seen with zero nominations.

I make sure it's known the company's in business. I'd see that it had a certain panache. That's what I'm good at. Not the work, not the work... the presentation.
