Al Robinson’s Oscars Predictions

Happy Oscars Day everybody!! These are my last minute predictions and I’ve been going back and forth on several categories all week. I made a couple changes specifically from the ones I made on the Flicksation Podcast episode (Oscar Pool Party), but for the sake of those picks, those are the ones I will be judged on in the competition we have between us over there. But the ones down below here are the ones I think have the best chances of winning tonight. I guess we’ll know for sure in a few more hours. Good luck everyone.

Best Motion Picture = La La Land
Best Director = Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
Best Actor, Leading Role = Denzel Washington (Fences)
Best Actress, Leading Role = Emma Stone (La La Land)
Best Actor, Supporting Role = Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
Best Actress, Supporting Role = Viola Davis (Fences)
Best Adapted Screenplay = Moonlight
Best Original Screenplay = Manchester by the Sea
Best Animated Feature Film = Zootopia
Best Documentary Feature = O.J.: Made in America
Best Foreign Language Film = The Salesman
Best Cinematography = La La Land
Best Film Editing = La La Land
Best Production Design = La La Land
Best Visual Effects = The Jungle Book
Best Costume Design = La La Land
Best Makeup & Hairstyling = Star Trek Beyond
Best Sound Editing = Hacksaw Ridge
Best Sound Mixing = La La Land
Best Music – Original Score = La La Land
Best Music – Original Song = La La Land (“City of Stars”)

    So did not see Moonlight winning Best Picture, I should have though. And then those stupid sound categories. Next year will be better.

    Nice predictions Al, I was leaning towards Barry Jenkins for Best Director and La La Land for Best Picture. Most of my picks are the same as you though (despite hoping Zootopia wouldn’t win) until we get to the tech awards. I thought Hacksaw Ridge was a show here for sound or either editing and that production or costume design might go elsewhere. When Arrival won Sound I was genuinely surprised but it felt right so I was doubly surprised then when Sound Editing went to Hacksaw Ridge seeing Kevin O’Connel win for the first time on his 21st nomination. As it was, that would not be the biggest surprise of the night. I was hoping August Wilson might get a posthumous Oscar for his adapted screenplay of Fences but again Moonlight getting it feels right and so your prediction was true. Star Trek would be deserving of make-up but I just figured Star Trek wasn’t going to win that.
