Best Costume Design Oscars Predictions (October)

The impeccable fashions of Princess Diana were as iconic as the lady herself. In Spencer, costume designer Jacqueline Durran is saddled with the daunting task of capturing Diana’s famous style in an array of vintage outfits worn by Kristen Stewart. Two-time winner Durran (Little Women and Anna Karenina) currently sits in my frontrunner position, but this is a highly competitive category with plenty of contenders nipping at her heels.

Durran’s main competitors belong to two films centred on fashion houses – one real, one fictional. While we are still yet to see House of Gucci, the very famous surname in the title suggests it’s going to be a marathon of glamourous costumes from Janty Yates. Yates won this category back in 2001 for Gladiator, but it remains her only nomination thus far. She’s also in contention for The Last Duel and could find herself a double nominee.

But if there’s one contender waiting in the wings to steal this one, it would have to be Cruella. Fashion design is entirely integral to the plot and both Emma Stone and Emma Thompson spend the entirety of the film draped in a litany of elaborate costumes from Jenny Beavan. Beavan is also a two-time winner (Mad Max: Fury Road and A Room With a View) and a genuine legend of her field. Expect Disney to chase this category with everything they’ve got.
