Best Supporting Actress Oscars Predictions (December)

There is only one name dominating the critics groups race for Best Supporting Actress thus far and that’s Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers. While she’s lost a few times to Rachel McAdams (Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.), she is sweeping the season in a way that feels reminiscent of Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) last year. With noms from the Golden Globe Awards and Critics Choice Awards, Randolph is undoubtedly our frontrunner for now.

The Globes and CCA agreed on five of their six nomination slots in Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Jodie Foster (Nyad), and Julianne Moore (May December) and it’s plausible those will be our final Oscars five. Foster is probably the most in danger of missing an Oscar nom like she did in 2020 for The Mauritanian, particularly with Nyad not standing as a major contender anywhere else.

That leaves the door open for all sorts of possibilities for that fifth spot. Maybe it’s Globe nominee Rosamund Pike (Saltburn) or CCA’s pick of America Ferrera (Barbie). Ferrera has one of the most talked about moments in the film and that monologue could be more than enough to snatch an Oscar nom. But I’m sticking with my wild card pick of Penélope Cruz (Ferrari) for now. We know the Academy loves her and she’s the best thing about that film.
