Best Supporting Actress Oscars Predictions (December)

The nominations for the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards matched five from six with their nominees for Best Supporting Actress in Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another), Amy Madigan (Weapons), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value), Elle Fanning (Sentimental Value) and Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good). Could they be our final five at the Oscars, too?

CCA’s sixth spot went to Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), while GG went with Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine). This is Blunt’s eighth nomination at the Globes, so it wasn’t a huge shock to see her included. Her film is DOA this season, so unless she gets in at SAG too, you can probably discount this as an anomaly. Mosaku kicked off the season with a win at the Gotham Awards, so she’s definitely still in the mix.

While an Oscar nomination for Madigan may have initially seemed shaky, she currently leads the wins from the critics groups, including a key victory from New York. Taylor has her fair share of wins, too, including Los Angeles. And Lilleaas scored with the National Board of Review, so they feel like our top three right now.

Obviously, it was important that Grande and Fanning both made it in at CCA and GG, but they’re far from locks just yet. Grande likely needs Wicked: For Good to land a Best Picture nomination for her to score a nod, too. After less-than-stellar reviews and box office results, that was starting to look unlikely. But the film surged to eight mentions on the Oscars shortlists, so perhaps it’s back in business. All eyes turn to the SAG nominations on January 7.
