Filmotomy Christmas Advent Calendar 2018 – Day 20

The Best Christmas Elf

Elf is a Christmas tradition in the Grant household. The film we all sit down and watch at
Christmas – and why not? It’s a great film, that is hilarious and sweet in equal measure.

The film follows Buddy (played excellently by Will Ferrell), a human who, in a strange set of circumstances, is adopted by an Elf and lives in The North Pole with other elves and Santa. One day, Buddy learns who he is really is and sets off to New York to find his real father Walter (James Caan).

Buddy-and-Jovie

Buddy is the best thing about this film. Eccentric and childlike, all he cares about is spreading “Christmas cheer for all to hear”. This is a big lesson that Buddy has learned from the elves in The North Pole. This is a big reason why he is such an optimistic character, much to the chagrin of his father – and even some of the elves.

When he finds out that “Santa” will be at the toy shop he works at, Buddy sneaks in and goes all out in sprucing up the store so that he and others will find joy from it. It’s a great scene that really shows the essence of Buddy.

Towards the end of the film, Santa’s sleigh crash lands in the middle of Central Park. Buddy witnesses this and rushes to help. When he isn’t confident in his ability to fix the sleigh, Santa tells him that “He is more of an elf than anyone I know”. I couldn’t agree more Santa.
