Best Sound Oscars Predictions (December)

With the unveiling of the Academy’s shortlists, we now know the final 10 films in contention for Best Sound. While there weren’t any major snubs, it was surprising to see big musicals The Color Purple and Wonka missing from the list, as well as the extremely loud animated epic Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The inclusion of Barbie was also somewhat unexpected, but it does prove the film is a major contender across the board. And how The Killer ended up on the shortlist when it’s been D.O.A all season is really quite shocking.

This race won’t really get interesting until we hear from bodies like the Cinema Audio Society and the Motion Picture Sound Editors in mid-January. Oppenheimer remains the unassailable leader here and the Academy’s shortlist didn’t really offer anything that could beat it.
