FILMOTOMY SAYS

Focus on this! Movies In Focus is overseen by my fellow Irish native based in Britain, Niall Browne, a Rotten Tomatoes approved critic with an evident love for cinema. Browne utilises his authority as an expert on movies to great advantage for this smart, professional site, and also covers literature reviews here, including publications from fellow critics Mark Kermode and Kim Newman.

Among the many highlights of Movies In Focus are the interviews Browne has conducted with some major figures in film such as actor James Frecheville and filmmakers Richard Donner and S. Craig Zahler. There’s an emphasis on dark, challenging, genre cinema, reflected in the site’s moody, deep blue visual scheme. It’s a lovely site to visit, with clear, simple layout drawing attention to Browne’s writing. In all, there’s a lot to savour at Movies In Focus. — Paddy Mulholland

WANT TO KNOW MORE

How was your Website / Podcast Conceived?

I’ve been writing about films for over a decade, starting with Collider and Screen Rant. I decided that I wanted to focus more on movies that interested me – old movies and new movies. Movies In Focus is an extension of my movie passions and peeves.

What makes your Website / Podcast stand out from the rest?

It’s off-beat and I don’t usually cover the big Marvel movies (although I’m not against covering those movies). You’ll find interesting reviews, fascinating interviews and solid opinion from a guy who loves movies.

Where do you see your Website / Podcast in the next 5 years?

Still going – and still growing.

Going to see A View To A Kill at the cinema.

Potentially a life changing experience.

Where do you stand on Streaming Services and their place in film?

I think it’s great that mid-level movies can be seen by mass audiences. These are the movies that I love most. I more saddened that the big screen is mainly reserved for slam-bam action, sequels and comic book movies.

What is your Honest Opinion on the entire Star Wars saga?

A masterpiece.

What is the Role of a Film Critic – and how important are they?

The role of a film critic is to tell you why any film is worth watching. Even the bad ones.

A Film Buff asks you for advice starting a Website / Podcast – what do you tell them?

Set up a website and write. Keep going and don’t stop. Don’t do it for money. Do it for passion.

I make sure it's known the company's in business. I'd see that it had a certain panache. That's what I'm good at. Not the work, not the work... the presentation.
