Festival De Cannes Sélection Officielle: Forushande

The first rule about not being in Cannes is that you can still talk about Cannes

Forushande (Le Client / The Salesman)

Asghar Farhadi

Iran

SUMMARY

Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman again deals with the dynamics of behavior within relationships, in this instance a couple try to prevent the cracks emerging as dilemmas and unforeseen circumstances play their part. Farhadi is something of a master in these parts, creating, building and lingering the tension and friction between human beings – just watch About Elly, A Separation, The Past. Taraneh Alidoosti and Shahab Hosseini are solid, providing enough emotion and illuminating the pressures they face. The unsettling pace and gripping simplicity are Farhadi trademarks. Reviews have not been negative, but there has been a strong whiff of The Salesman not being the film-makers best work.

COMPETITION PROSPECTS

Hard to call this given the non-spectacular response. But then the same can be said for Dheepan prior to the Palme d’Or win last year. Farhadi is a truly strong contender in any arena, so a Best Director or Screenplay prize is not out of the question here.

I make sure it's known the company's in business. I'd see that it had a certain panache. That's what I'm good at. Not the work, not the work... the presentation.
