Final Oscars Nominations Predictions – Best Sound

With the Academy’s nominations announcement drawing closer by the day, it’s time to lay it all on the line with my final Oscar nomination predictions. And, with BAFTA nominations coming five days after the Academy’s announcement, we’re flying without that typical precursor stat. At least we have their longlists for some reference.

Without those BAFTA noms and the Cinema Audio Society nods coming just a few days before the Academy’s announcement, we’re left to look at the nominations from the Critics Choice Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors. F1, Sinners, One Battle After Another, and Sirāt scored nods at both, so they feel like our secure top four. The latter missed a mention on the BAFTA longlist, but I wouldn’t read anything into that.

That leaves the final spot up for grabs. Given the first two Avatar films both scored Oscar nominations for sound, you’d presume Avatar: Fire and Ash would be a safe bet to follow suit. But the fact it couldn’t land a single nod with MPSE makes me question its chances. On the flipside, Frankenstein earned three MPSE nominations, so that feels like a stronger chance. It could go either way, so flip a coin to make your last stand.

BEST SOUND PREDICTIONS:
1. F1 (Apple Original Films) – BAFTA longlist, CCA, MPSE
2. Sinners (Warner Bros.) – BAFTA longlist, CCA, MPSE
3. One Battle After Another (Warner Bros.) – BAFTA longlist, CCA, MPSE
4. Sirāt (NEON) – CCA, MPSE
5. Frankenstein (Netflix) – BAFTA longlist, MPSE

Alternate: Avatar: Fire and Ash (20th Century Studios) – BAFTA longlist, CCA
