BAFTA Announce Their Film Nominations

The British Film Academy (BAFTA) announced their nominations in film for 2017 early this morning. Denis Villeneuve’s Director nod for Blade Runner 2049 was an epic surprise for fans of the sci-fi reboot. But traditionally, BAFTA likes to sway towards British talent, and coincidentally many of the big-hitters this awards season are dominant here.

Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water heads the nomination pack, but Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour, and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk all scored well. There was, however, no mention of Wright in the Director category. Other British mentions include Paddington 2, Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, God’s Own Country, and Lady MacBeth.

American movies all over the awards race Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird were missing in many of the usual categories – including Film and Director. Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya continues its consistent citing of the actresses. But Steven Spielberg’s The Post and Des Rees’ Mudbound were nowhere to be seen.

  1. For over a decade the BAFTA noms used to look like a cookie-cutter sampling of every amateur’s list of Oscar predictions. Not so much this year. Maybe it’s the wide field with no announced front runners this year. Whatever, glad to see the change ups here.
