Marriage Story: 2 Posters, 2 Trailers, 2 Sides to Every Heartbreak

Yesterday Noah Baumbach and Netflix debuted the first set of teaser trailers for their upcoming release Marriage Story. A tale shared about an unfolding divorce that spans the length of the country as each partner pursues their individual creative careers on opposite coasts.

Baumbach’s main characters Charlie and Nicole each get a shot to talk about what they love about the other in the “His & Hers” style trailers. Charlie loves that Nicole “knows when to push [him] and when to leave [him] alone” and Nicole loves that “he takes all of [her] moods steadily [and] doesn’t make [her] feel bad about them”.

This seemingly romantic reminiscing culminates with the two of them sat at great distance in an empty room not knowing what to say to one another.

In 2005, Baumbach earned his first and only Oscar nomination for The Squid and The Whale, which was an exploration of his parents divorce. This time it is argued that he has taken to the page to explore his own. He was married to Jennifer Jason Leigh for eight years before their divorce in 2013 only three years after the birth of their son Rohmer Baumbach.

Baumbach said that “With these companion trailers I wanted to show the relationship through the eyes of both characters. There are many sides to every story, and the movie embraces these different viewpoints in order to find the shared truth.”

Marriage Story will have its World Premiere in Venice Film Festival on August 29th 2019 before carrying on to Toronto International Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Following on from this it will have a select theatrical release alongside its Netflix release this Autumn.
